Thesis Statement
More Than Human, visualizes the real life examples of transhumanism in natural and trauma induced evolution. Exploring how humans have evolved to go beyond the common physical and mental boundaries. Using fantastical imagery, to depict anomalies in human evolution to show the capabilities of humanity in a post human state.
Transhumanism is the belief or theory that the human race can evolve beyond its current physical and mental limitations, especially by means of science and technology. My thesis explores real life examples of exceptional people with superhuman abilities. The abilities are either a form of natural human evolution, both of mind and body, or induced physical trauma, bringing out new talents amidst recovery. I aim to showcase this kind of evolution in fantastical situations to show the possibilities of man, some of which are not too far from reach for all.
The Inspirations
The Echocruiser 15,000 ~ Inspired by Daniel Kish
Daniel Kish, is a blind man who can see, losing his eyes to retina cancer gave him the ability to heighten his other senses so well that he is still able to navigate just as well as a seeing person, being able to ride his bike through traffic, climb trees and camp on his own.
The Echocruiser 15,000 is a spacecraft operated by a character with the astronomical ability to blindly fly spacecrafts using his echolocation to dodge meteorite showers
The Dutch Daredevil ~ Inspired by Wim Hof
Wim Hof, known as both the Dutch Daredevil and Iceman, has the ability to withstand extremely cold conditions while keeping his body temperature steady, by using the Buddhist meditation technique Tummo.
The Dutch Daredevil character uses the same technique to withstand the below 0° temperature in space.
The Sprint ~ Inspired by Dean Karnazes
Dean Karnazes is an endurance athlete who has submitted himself to the most physically and mentally taxing tests. From conquering a 350 mile run (with no stops) to a sweltering sprint through 120 degree heat in Death Valley, this man has incredible stamina and endurance.
The Sprint, has the ability to physically adapt his body to the environmental conditions he is exposed to.
La Araignée ~ Inspired by Alain Robert
Alain Robert is a French urban climber who climbs buildings such as the Eiffel Tower. The Empire State Building and Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong, without any safety equipment.
La Araignée is a sticky limbed character who simply sticks to everything he seeks to climb.
The Zookeeper ~ Inspired by Alonzo Clemons
Alonzo Clemons suffered severe brain trauma at a young age, leaving him with a 50 IQ and low communication skills. However, he developed the ability to sculpt accurate 3D models of any animal he had seen.
The Zookeeper is a mystical man who make fantastical hybrids of animals.
Thymesia ~ Inspired by Rebecca Sharrock
Rebecca Sharrock has a rare condition called HSAM, her mind has the ability to remember everything, but she also does not have the capacity to forget.
Thymesia, is a character who has all her memories recorded as tattoos on her body.
The Seer ~ Inspired by Veronica Seider
Veronica Seider has the unique ability of hyper sight, she is able to see objects clearly as far as 1.6 km away and is able to distinguish the individual colours that makeup a colour television.
The Seer is a character who's hyper sight is depicted through their ability to see with their third eye.
Fearless Sam ~ Inspired by SM
SM has a rare condition related to damaged parts of her brain, where she cannot feel pain, fear or anxiety.
Fearless Sam is a passionate fighter who uses her advantage of feeling nothing to challenge people to fights for fun.
